Rangers, Jacob Trouba agree to seven-year, $56M deal

The New York Rangers have agreed to terms on a new deal with defenceman Jacob Trouba, avoiding arbitration with the restricted free agent.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the deal is worth $56 million over seven years.

The Rangers acquired Trouba, 25, from the Winnipeg Jets in a trade last month for defenceman Neal Pionk and the 20th overall pick in the 2019 draft – used by the Jets to selected Finish blue-liner Ville Heinola.

Trouba registered eight goals and 50 points in 82 regular-season games for the Jets in 2018-19, but Winnipeg was unlikely to come to terms with the Rochester, Mich., native given the other high-profile RFAs Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff must sign this off-season.

Selected with the ninth pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, Trouba has 179 points in 408 regular-season games for the Jets over six seasons, adding six points in 27 post-season contests.

The contract is the second major commitment the Rangers have made to a player. On July 1, the team signed free agent winger Artemi Panarin to a seven-year, $81.5 million contract.
