MIN@DET: Dubnyk pushes across to rob Athanasiou

DETROIT -- Luke Kunin had a goal and an assist and Devan Dubnyk made 26 saves when the Minnesota Wild defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 win at Little Caesars Arena on Friday.

The Wild (29-27-6), who won for the second night in a row, lead the Colorado Avalanche by one point for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.
The two wins came in Minnesota's first two games after trading forward Charlie Coyle to the Boston Bruins for forward
Ryan Donato

"That trade was a real wake-up call for all of us," Wild defenseman Ryan Suter said. "All of a sudden, we've lost a great player and someone who we were also close with. We know we have a good team that is capable at a high level, but we need to do it every night."
The Red Wings (23-30-9) have lost four straight (0-2-2) and trail the Pittsburgh Penguins by 16 points for the second wild card from the Eastern Conference.

MIN@DET: Kunin beats Bernier in tight

"I didn't like our dig level at all," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "They are a good defensive team, but we didn't make this game nearly hard enough on them."
Dylan Larkin had two assists, giving him 200 NHL points, and Jonathan Bernier made 32 saves for Detroit.
The Red Wings nearly scored first midway through the first period when Darren Helm took the puck away from Dubnyk on a Minnesota power play, but Mikael Granlund stopped the shot on the goal line.
"(Dubnyk) was thanking Granlund after that save," Suter said.
Kunin made it 1-0 for the Wild at 16:56 of the first, putting a rebound in off the goal post for his fifth goal.
"We've got a few young guys who are getting a great chance to play in key situations," Kunin said. "We know we need to take advantage of it, and I felt like we did that tonight. It's big to be getting time on the power play and being on the ice when we've got a one-goal lead in the last two minutes."
Jordan Greenway gave Minnesota a 2-0 lead at 18:54, skating past Anthony Mantha and scoring his 11th goal.
"I had a pretty good look on that one," Greenway said. "If I had missed it, I don't think I would have slept much tonight."

MIN@DET: Greenway buries wrist shot from high slot

Tyler Bertuzzi made it 2-1 at 1:35 of the second period, tipping in Filip Hronek's point shot for his 15th goal.
Dubnyk made a lunging blocker save at 6:24 of the period -- Andreas Athanasiou had already wheeled away to celebrate -- and Eric Staal made it 3-1 with a power play goal at 10:09.
"(Dubnyk) made some 10-bell saves out there when we needed them," Wild coach Bruce Boudreau said. "Hopefully, he's getting his confidence back for when we go back home."
Staal's goal ended an 11-game scoreless streak.
"I really needed that one," he said. "It was huge for me, but it was also a big moment for the team. Devin had made some big saves, but that gave him a little bit of a cushion."

MIN@DET: Staal cleans up in front on power play

Mantha made it 3-2 with a power-play goal at 3:06 of the third period. Mantha has five points (one goal, four assists) in his past two games.
Trevor Daley hit the post for Detroit with 3:35 to play.

They said it

"I don't want to get their heads blowing up, but look at the play of our young guys. Those guys are our life force and they are going to be driving this organization for the next few years. (Joel Eriksson Ek) has been so strong for us, Greenway gets a goal and Kunin gets a goal." -- Wild coach Bruce Boudreau
"Those guys played last night in New York, so they were looking at a tough back-to-back with travel, but we were the ones who weren't ready to play. We didn't have nearly enough effort in the first period, and we can't put that on anyone but ourselves." -- Red Wings center Dylan Larkin
